POE HOUSE WRITING CONTEST!
Posted June 22, 2012
This writing contest is open to all. Please read all of the information carefully. WHAT: Our first-ever writing contest, open to all, with adult and teen categories. Write an essay or a prose piece, or write a poem. Be creative and write from the heart! Write in your own voice, or write in the style of Edgar Allan Poe! Unleash your imagination, and tell your reader why “The Poe House: A Jewel in Baltimore’s Crown” is so! THEME: the theme of your piece is, essentially, what the Poe House in Baltimore means to you, the City of Baltimore, and the world. (and not necessarily in that order!) CATEGORIES: There are four categories: Adult prose/essay, Adult poetry, Teen (age 16-19) prose/essay, Teen (16-19) poetry. Sorry, there is no category for children this year.
GUIDELINES: Prose/essay submissions can be no more than 1000 words. (Write and re-write! The shorter the better! Remember: “Omit needless words!”) Poetry submission length is at the entrant’s discretion (but shorter is sweeter!) You must submit three (3) copies of your entry. They will NOT be returned, so make sure you keep a copy for yourself! There is NO FEE to enter.
Your piece must have a cover page with your name, address, telephone number, and email address on it. DO NOT PUT ANY IDENTIFYING INFORMATION, ESPECIALLY YOUR NAME, ON ANY OTHER PAGE OF YOUR ENTRY. If you are under the age of 18, your entry MUST have the entry form signed by a legal parent or guardian. (The downloadable entry form is below). DO NOT STAPLE YOUR WORK. Please use a paper clip, holding each of the three copies together (if there are multiple pages). Use simple, plain, white bond. Do not use fancy paper. Double space. Use 11 point Times Roman font. Do not use any fancy fonts anywhere. Do not illustrate or send illustrations/pictures with your entry. SUBMISSION DEADLINES: Your entry must be post-marked by August 1st, 2012.
